TRAILING THE JAGUAR (NOTES)
Q.1) What qualities did Rod have to make him a good leader of the group?
Answer: Rod displayed important leadership qualities like courage, adaptability, respect for local knowledge, and patience. His courage was clear when he entered the jaguar’s cave alone, ready to face any danger. He was adaptable and open-minded, paying attention to the indigenous people’s ideas, such as using bird-lime as a trap, and valuing their deep understanding of the Amazon forest. His patience stood out as he waited for long hours in tough conditions, demonstrating his endurance and dedication to the group’s goal without rushing or risking safety. These qualities made him a capable and respected leader.
Q.2) ‘The inbred cat-instinct to be clean dominated even his fear.’ Describe how the hunters used this instinct to finally capture the jaguar.
Answer: The hunters cleverly took advantage of the jaguar’s natural habit of grooming itself. They covered a hidden net with bird-lime, a sticky substance, knowing that if the jaguar got caught in it, it would instinctively try to clean itself. When the jaguar stepped into the trap, it became focused on licking and pawing at the sticky mess on its fur instead of trying to escape. This distraction made it unaware of the approaching hunters, allowing them to safely capture it and place it in a cage. By using this simple trick, they managed to catch the jaguar without any struggle.
Q.3) Willard Price often combines suspense and humor in Trailing the Jaguar. Do you agree? Support your answer with examples from the text.
Answer: The story creates suspense in scenes such as when the jaguar is seen approaching the trap or when Rod ventures alone into the cave to check if the jaguar is inside. These moments build tension as readers wait to see what will happen next. At the same time, humor is added when Rod, expecting to catch the jaguar, accidentally gets caught in his own net. This amusing twist highlights his mistake and provides a light-hearted contrast to the tense situations. By blending these elements, the story keeps readers engaged with a mix of excitement and entertainment.
