QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

----------------------------------------

1. ‘Have you come back?’ said the woman. ‘I thought that no one had come back.’ Does this statement give some clue about the story? If yes, what is it?

Answer: The statement shows that the woman and the narrator already knew each other. The story is about a girl who wants to get back her mother’s old belongings from an older woman called Mrs. Dorling. Before the war, the girl’s mother had moved her valuable things to the house of Mrs. Dorling, a trusted acquaintance. But after her mother died in the war, Mrs. Dorling thought no one would come to claim them. When the girl finally went to collect the items, she was shocked. The statement makes it clear that Mrs. Dorling is selfish, as she wants to keep the antiques even though they are not hers. She pretends not to recognize the girl and refuses to let her enter the house.

2. The story is divided into pre-War and post-War times. What hardships do you think the girl underwent during these times?

Answer: The story 'The Address' is set in two periods — pre-war and post-war. The girl came from a wealthy family that owned many valuable possessions. The narrative shows the hardships she had to face during those times.

Before the war, the girl lived away from her mother and rarely visited her. Her mother was anxious about losing her precious belongings because of the war. The family feared that they might have to abandon their home. During this period, the girl stayed in a small rented house with shutters covered by blackout paper, which blocked the outside view. The constant threat of death also surrounded them.

After the war, life slowly returned to normal. The girl could open the shutters of her room and look outside freely without fear. She also felt a strong desire to see her mother’s possessions again, which led her to visit Mrs. Dorling.

3. Why did the narrator of the story want to forget the address?

Answer: The narrator wanted to forget the address because it reminded her of her mother, their home, their precious belongings, and the life she had before the war. She knew that these are the things she could never get back. So, she chose to forget the address and move forward with her life.

4. ‘The Address’ is a story of human predicament that follows war. Comment.

Answer: War always brings death and destruction. The story The Address shows the life of a girl before and after the war. The war created many physical and emotional difficulties for her. She lost both her home and her mother. Moreover, a stranger woman, Mrs. Dorling, took away her valuable belongings and refused to give them back. The story reflects both pre-war and post-war experiences. It highlights different emotions from the pain of losing loved ones to the selfish and cruel behavior of people. All these feelings are powerfully expressed in this story.
